History & Values

“I shall always remember Riviera not only for the quality of the course,
but for the whole club and the membership.” - Ben Hogan

The Riviera Country Club was founded in 1927 by the members of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. Their vision was to build the premier golf course and outdoor facility in Southern California away from the traffic and congestion of Los Angeles. The serene escape they imagined became a reality in 1927 when the golf course opened to critical acclaim. The main clubhouse, built in a Spanish revival style, followed in 1928.

The club called upon George C. Thomas to design a course that would challenge the world’s best. After 18 months and 15 iterations of his design, his masterpiece and crowning achievement opened for play. Thomas’ design has withstood the test of time. The Riviera Country Club is a consistently ranked a top 50 golf course in the world and in the top 25 courses in the United States. True to its founder’s intentions, it welcomes the world’s greatest golfers each year for the Genesis Open and has played host to major events such as the US Open, PGA Championship, US Amateur, US Senior Open, NCAA Championships and will be the golf site of the upcoming 2028 Olympic games in Los Angeles.

In 1963 the club’s polo grounds were transformed into what is now the tennis facility. The Riviera Tennis Club features 25 courts and provides tennis programming for all ages and abilities. Boasting one of the largest teaching programs in the United States, The Riviera Tennis Club’s 10 teaching pros and 3 hitters are available exclusively to members and their families.

As the club nears its centennial, it’s as vibrant and extraordinary as it has ever been. In the words of the club’s owner, Mr. Noboru Watanabe, “It is people’s passion that moves reality and brings dreams to life. I will continue to improve the great traditions that have been passed down from my predecessors, and pass them along to the next generation.”

Learn More About Our History

Our Vision

“Only the best is good enough.”

Our vision statement is simple yet profound. It’s a quote that dates back to our original club planner, Frank Garbutt, and his dream for The Riviera Country Club. More than a motto, it is a promise that our executive team and staff strive to fulfill each day for our members and guests.

Our Mission

“We will create memorable moments by providing genuine hospitality and personalized service enabling the club to reach its targets.”

The Riviera Country Club team prides itself in being the catalyst for memorable moments each day. We are committed to exceeding expectations. Those who visit our club often remark that our staff continually goes above and beyond for our members and guests. Those acts, however small, are a symbol to our commitment to fulfill the mission of the club.

Our Core Values

Respect Life • Healthy Life • Enjoy Life

Respect Life

The dream of Riviera was built on the idea that we must "Respect Life" and the enjoyment of the treasures that surround us. When Frank Garbutt stated "Only the best is good enough," he was not just describing a golf course or club house, he was professing a philosophy for the very essence of Riviera.

It is our desire to help make the world a better place, and that starts by making the club a better place each day. From using the freshest local ingredients in our kitchens to environmentally sound maintenance practices on the golf course and grounds the Riviera is committed to the ecology and sustainability of our community and the planet.

Healthy for Life

Whether holding a five-iron, tennis racquet, or fork the Riviera's members and guests enjoy a "Healthy for Life" philosophy. Over the years, the club has embarked on a number of health and wellness initiatives and continue to improve upon them each year.

The activities our members have access to aid in both their physical health and mental health. Art and music play a role as well, furthering our wholistic approach to health consciousness.

Our kitchen uses sustainably sourced ingredients. The food we serve is purchased from farmers markets, local purveyors and is even grown in our own organic gardens. Our promise is to serve only the very best.

Enjoy Life

From The Riviera's spectacular golf course to the state of the art tennis facility to the grand and luxurious clubhouse, enjoying life at Riviera is as simple as stepping foot on these storied grounds.

As a privileged Tennis Member at The Riviera Country Club, you are not only limited to the use of 24 well maintained courts, but also to the benefits that come with the membership.  We offer a wide variety of opportunities to help enhance your game in the form of Instructional Lessons, Intra- and Interclub Tournaments, fast-paced Clinics to work on footwork, eye-hand coordination and stamina. Our Tennis Professionals are current and retired Pro Circuit competitors.

Extraordinary Golf Course

For nearly a century, our golf course has withstood the tests of time. The course was developed by the Los Angeles Athletic Club over an 18 month span, opening to critical acclaim in 1927. The LAAC commissioned George C. Thomas, an amateur architect who agreed to take on the project free of charge. It became his crowning achievement and today is considered one of the finest natural layouts in all of golf. As Hale Irwin attests, “The integrity of the course is influenced greatly by the fact that no two holes are alike and the course has been placed, rather than forced, into the land.”

The beauty in Thomas’ design is that each hole presents a new challenge. Johnny Miller, winner of the 1981 Los Angeles Open, described Riviera as, “Definitely one of the greatest, no-nonsense golf courses in the world! It requires a player to play every club in his bag and every shot in his game.”

Whether it’s a casual round with friends or a major championship, Riviera never ceases to provide a thrilling challenge. As Arnold Palmer once wrote of Riviera, “I consider it one of the great tests of golf.”

Extraordinary Championships

The Riviera has hosted a U.S. Open, two PGA Championships, a U.S. Senior Open, the NCAA Mens Championship and the US Amateur Championship. In addition, it serves as a perennial stop on the PGA Tour welcoming golf’s rarest talents for the Genesis Open.

Extraordinary Names

The greatest golfers of each generation have had their names carved onto the hardware at The Riviera. Legends like Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, Tom Watson, Sir Nick Faldo, Fred Couples, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and most recently Bubba Watson have all been crowned champions here. It’s a testament to the timeless design and the passion of our agronomy team.

Hogan’s Legacy

Ben Hogan has a special place in Riviera golf history. In fact, the course was nicknamed “Hogan’s Alley” after his incredible run of 3 victories in an 18 month span including two Los Angeles Opens and a US Open sandwiched in between.

When Hogan won his first U.S. Open at The Riviera Country Club in 1948, he remarked, “Some of my most pleasant memories and thoughts are of this wonderful club and magnificent golf course.” Hogan’s feelings are echoed by the world’s best golfers today who return each year to compete in the Genesis Open.

A bronze statue stands in Hogan’s honor a few yards from the putting greens. One can imagine Hogan himself looking out on the divine valley of Riviera and admiring it’s intricately sloped fairways and it’s delicately carved bunkers amongst the lanes of sycamore and eucalyptus trees. It’s a breathtaking site where on a clear day you can see straight through to the Pacific Ocean. It truly is an unrivaled setting.

Whether holding a five-iron, tennis racquet, or fork the Riviera’s members and guests enjoy a “Healthy for Life” philosophy.
